The Full Profile

Amanirenas, Kandake of Kush, led Kushite resistance to Roman expansion and negotiated a favorable peace that protected Kushite autonomy. Amanirenas was a kandake, or ruling queen, of Kush. After Roman Egypt pushed south, Kushite forces attacked Roman positions and fought a multi-year conflict. The eventual settlement preserved Kushite independence and removed a tribute obligation, making Amanirenas a lasting symbol of African sovereignty and strategic resistance. Her armies overran Roman forts and carried off a bronze head of Augustus, later found buried beneath a temple staircase at Meroë; the peace she negotiated at Samos kept Kush independent for another three centuries.
