The Full Profile

Hiawatha, Haudenosaunee Leader & Peacemaker, worked within Haudenosaunee tradition to build unity among nations and strengthen confederated governance. Hiawatha is a major figure in Haudenosaunee oral history and is associated with the formation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy alongside the Great Peacemaker. His story emphasizes diplomacy, condolence, unity, and political transformation. Later popular culture often confused him with unrelated fictional portrayals, but his historical significance lies in Indigenous governance. Restored by the Peacemaker's condolence ceremony, he became the orator who carried the message of peace into the councils of five nations; the wampum belt bearing his name remains the flag of the Haudenosaunee.
