The Full Profile
Malcolm X, Human Rights Activist, reframed Black freedom as a question of self-determination, international human rights, dignity, and political power. Malcolm X became one of the most influential Black political voices of the 20th century. After rising to prominence in the Nation of Islam, he left the organization in 1964, traveled through Africa and the Middle East, and increasingly framed the Black American struggle in international human-rights terms. His speeches and intellectual evolution continue to shape political debate. His Autobiography, published months after his 1965 assassination, became one of the most influential books in American life; his insistence on dignity 'by any means necessary' became the grammar of Black self-determination movements worldwide.
