The Full Profile

Marcus Garvey, Pan-African Organizer & Entrepreneur, built a mass global movement centered on Black pride, institution-building, economic independence, and African self-determination. Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and built one of the largest mass movements in modern Black history. Through newspapers, public rallies, businesses, and the Black Star Line, he promoted Black-owned institutions and global Pan-African identity. His influence continued long after his deportation from the United States. His UNIA became the largest Black mass movement in history, with chapters on four continents and a newspaper banned across colonial Africa; ghana's flag, the Nation of Islam, and Rastafari all grew from seeds he planted.
