The Full Profile

Sundiata Keita, Founder of the Mali Empire, established the political foundations of Mali, linking trade, law, oral tradition, and imperial governance. Sundiata Keita emerged from Manding political struggles to defeat Sumanguru and build the Mali Empire. His reign became the foundation of the Sundiata Epic, preserved by generations of griots. Mali's later wealth and international reach rested on the state structures and alliances associated with his rule. His victory at Krina destroyed Sosso power and opened the goldfields of the upper Niger to Mali's control; the epic of his life is still performed by griots today, nearly eight centuries later.
