Barbados
Barbados won independence in 1966 after 339 years under one flag — and in 2021 completed the journey by becoming a republic.
The Land Before
Arawak then Kalina settlement; Portuguese sailors named the island for its bearded fig trees but never stayed.
The Colonial Record
The first English colony designed from the start as a sugar-and-slavery society; a plantation society so complete it was called ‘Little England’.
The Timeline of Record
| 1627 | English settlers found Holetown; within decades the island is England’s richest colony. |
| 1640s–1661 | The sugar revolution: plantations swallow the island, and the 1661 slave code becomes the template for the English Caribbean — and Carolina. |
| 1816 | Bussa’s rebellion — thousands of enslaved people rise; the revolt is crushed but remembered as the first of the three great emancipation-era uprisings. |
| 1834 | Abolition. |
| 1966 | Independence under Errol Barrow. |
| 2021 | Barbados becomes a republic, replacing the British crown with its own president. |
What Barbados Gave the Record
The 1661 Barbados slave code became the legal template for plantation slavery across English America, including South Carolina.
The Current Wire
A republic since 2021 with tourism and finance; one of the highest literacy rates in the world.
